In order to get the waves rolling we have chosen to frame Waves of Wisdom and Share a Brainwave in a few simple ways. We have done so as it our experience that some boundaries and ground rules stimulate creation.
Why must all entries focus on WAVES?
Chosing one restricted – yet very abundant – theme for everyone to interpret sets a creative lever for all participants. A common – yet multifacetted – ground to share and explore together. When challenged to work on a new theme, the challenge stimulates creativity and brings old memories and new ideas to mind. Yet noone will have thought of all the possible meanings, twists and turns – and thus, when exploring the other contributions, one might more often than not find oneself exclaiming “Oh, I hadn’t thought of that twist”…which generally releases yet another series of brainwaves…
Why are you mixing disciplines and cultures?
More often than not the enzymes that trigger great inventions and creations come from other academic fields, companies, cultures, backgrounds, generations, genders or spheres than the inventors own. Reading, seeing or overhearing something that might be common knowledge, natural – even banal – to some, might be the perfect trigger to others. This accidental exchange of vital brainwaves often happens to students who gather, kiss and hang out cross-faculty. But in the busy, hyperfocused work- and everydaylife – it happens far too rarely.
We believe that a lot of important new inventions and creations would be triggered if we allowed ourselves to experience something different every day, meet new people, invite new impulses. Share a Brainwave and Waves of Wisdom are easy ways to get started – to embrace different thinking and thinkers.
Why do you encourage mixed media?
We never really understood why the layout of great academic journals should be so conventional. Nor did we understand why there’s hardly any text in artbooks and artzines. We believe that text and art intertwined is the most inspiring. We find that both gain a lot of new meanings and interpretations from eachother. Therefore the printed issues of Reflexioner resemble artbooks in their layout, colouring and illustrative aspirations – but still highly prioritize well-edited readable texts. Mixing the best of both worlds to an inspiring new genre. In the Waves of Wisdom-experiment we wish to mix the media, words and visions as well – combining as many senses as possible and thus stimulating new brainwaves.
